🐖 Piperazine citrate for pigs & swine

Piperazine citrate is a mainstay for treating the large roundworm of pigs, given easily through feed or drinking water across a herd. Here's how to dose and use it responsibly.

For food-producing animals, work through a veterinarian. In the U.S., extralabel drug use in food animals such as pigs & swine is permitted only under the direction of a licensed veterinarian, and meat/egg withdrawal periods must be observed per that veterinarian and the product's labeling. The information here is educational and is not directions for use. Note: Vetr WormGard is a piperazine product intended for dogs and cats, not for pigs & swine.

What piperazine treats in pigs & swine

In swine, piperazine treats the large roundworm Ascaris suum and, per some labels, partially the nodular worm Oesophagostomum. It does not treat whipworms, lungworms, or external parasites.

Piperazine dosage for pigs & swine

A commonly cited swine dose is about 110 mg/kg of piperazine base (roughly 100–200 mg/kg by product), delivered in feed or drinking water. For groups, estimate total body weight and medicate the feed or water they'll consume in the treatment window, following your product's mixing rate.

Repeat the dose in about 30 days. A follow-up treatment about a month later clears worms that were larvae during the first dose. Combine with clean housing to reduce reinfection from contaminated environments.

How to give it

Piperazine is typically mixed into feed or dissolved in the drinking water. Withhold feed or water briefly beforehand (per label) so pigs consume the medicated ration promptly and get a full dose.

Safety notes for pigs & swine

Piperazine has a wide safety margin in pigs. The key responsibility is the meat withdrawal period — commonly around 7 days on many swine products, but always confirm the exact figure on your label before slaughter. Get veterinary advice for sick animals.

Questions about piperazine for pigs & swine

How long before slaughter should I stop piperazine?

Observe the meat withdrawal period on your specific product — commonly around 7 days for swine, but confirm on the label since it varies by product and country.

How is piperazine given to a herd of pigs?

Usually mixed into feed or drinking water at the labeled rate, based on the group's estimated total body weight and what they'll consume in the treatment window.

Does piperazine treat all pig worms?

No — it targets the large roundworm Ascaris suum (and partly nodular worms). Whipworms and lungworms need a different dewormer.
